Stoat (formerly known as Revolt) is a free, open-source chat platform that works a lot like Discord. Revolt rebranded to Stoat in October 2025 after receiving a cease-and-desist about its name, but the platform itself hasn't changed — it's the same project, same community, same code.

The big difference with Discord? Stoat doesn't ask for your ID. No phone number, no identity documents. It's also fully open-source, so anyone can audit the code or self-host their own instance. You still get servers, channels, voice chat, bots, and custom themes.

Since Discord announced mandatory identity verification for all users, a lot of people have been looking for somewhere else to go. Stoat has been the most popular pick.
